hm..
i don't use gimp..but i think
the easiest way is to have the wanted outlines painted harder then the others
then changing the contrast of the sketches. unsure it is possible with gimp, but i heard
it should be good.. so it would have an contrast option possibly
with harder contrast the hard lines would become stronger and the soft not wanted lines
disappearing after a while.
i hope it helped you a bit

indeed, with careful adjustment of the brightness/contrast, a lot of the cleaning up work can be done for you. It's all I do. Anything it doesn't do for you, you'll have to go in with a brush or eraser tool and clean up by hand.

Using a levels tool can do wonders to pencil scans

yes, at some point in my process I usually auto-levels, too. mess around with the levels and brightness/contrast. they are your friends.

Thanks guys. ANother tut I saw actually moved away from curves and levels. Instead it started by using the "Slelct from background" when making a new layer. GIMP as far as I know cannot do that, however for the most part it is a photoshop equivalent.

ah yes i know that one..
selecting a color like white
then the amount of colors near the white, so what only the full black outlines left.
then cutting everything away
and the black outlines you can take at the upper layer and coloring everything behind.
but whats mostly for photoshop...
better try what contrast or levels changing with gimp if its possible
