I use VLC for almost everythying, it is way faster then any other player out there, + it easely play incomplete files + no need ot mess around with codecs.
The only thing VLC fal behind with is subtitle suport, for that I recomend that you use mplayer. You can find it here http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/news.html
Ignore WMP, it's hte most pece of crap software there is, it also eat a ton of CPU, eg compared to VLC it eats double the CPU.

Personally I use Zoom Player, VLC gives me lots of strange compatibility problems and mosaic artefacts. But I must admit that VLC is good if you cant play something.

Most players are nice, VLC, Zoom, Mediaplayer classic.
Most important are the codes to keep it fast (a good pc helps 2 ofcourse).
Mainly xvid codecs are used, i use FFDSHOW for this which really improves performance. Another big plus is ffdshow will allow you to enhance the image and sound.

- what codecs you use (which you have installed).
- specs of your pc (pentium? speed? memory)
