My skills at drawing are somewhat limited I'm afraid, and so I prefer to stick to writing... however, over the last few months I have found myself with quite a bit of spare time, and figured I would have a go at creating something myself.

I freely admit that these are not great, and as they were done using only a free iPhone app, I don't expect anyone to get excited... any feedback would be appreciated though.

Since those initial images, I've been working on drawing loli's with more anime features, particularly faces. I struggle to get the faces anywhere near the expressions I want anyway when drawing them with more realistic features, so I figured trying the anime style might be easier... to save time, I ignored shading and stuck with solid colours, which I quite liked, at least on one of them.

Anyway, these were my first attempts... If anyone has any hints on how to draw facial features, particularly eyes, I would appreciate it

First: Nice work, I can see you becoming famous with just a little more practice Smile

Secondly, I used this page to practice drawing faces here on my tablet. Keep up the good work!

Hi Mek (sounds like a train... <go look Hymek up>)
really good start to your artistry - pure genius in fact if this was done on a phone!! Must have been fiddly.

Anyhow, nice colouring, particularly in the first set - long may it continue. Nothing wrong with 'western' (non anime) faces in my opinion.

Well done.

Thanx 4 sharing. The poses are really good. As far as eyes, they're just really difficult a lot of times. just remember, not just brows, but pupil dialation and lid aperture. You're doin just fine. I don't claim to be an expert but i have been drawing for a while. Remember too the mouth eyelashes (even if they're drwn as single curves) add so much to the emotion of the piece.
Please continue posting ;D

Thanks. You can actually get some good art apps for phones at the moment, but they it is a very long slow process a getting the right placement of each pixel an be very time consuming. The first five were drawn while working nights in Italy during the early part of the Libia conflict... The other two were drawn at home, and are a little more rushed... I might go back and improve upon them later.
Meanwhile however, I have started working on creating a series of pictures to illustrate one the first of the stories I wrote for this site... Link in my sig... I have almost finished the first one, and have some ideas for more using the same characters.

I can't even imagine doing this with a phone, bravo.
Would love it if the bodies on the loli's were smaller when with an older person....not a criticism, just a suggestion.

I like the realistic effect of the first one. The anime eyes, on the other hand... maybe they need a little more work.

Finished another one for you to enjoy... at least I hope you will. This was mostly looking at drawing faces, made several attempts at it, but finally settled on a more realistic impression with closed eyes. I can't quite decide whether I prefer the more natural faces of my first few attempts or the anime faces, both are quite challenging for different reasons.

I am now working on creating few images to go with one of my stories... I'm not sure how they will go as I still need more practice (and a better program like photoshop or something), but I've done some rough sketches already with ideas taken from how I see the characters in the story, so I should be able to post them up here soon.

Post your comments as usual... criticism is equally appreciated as I would like to improve.

I've been absent for a bit with some minor internet problems, but I've kept busy and this is what I have been working on:

These are my attempt at creating Chloe, my lead character in the story Practical Education (Link in sig). I want to create a fair few of these so that I can put one with each chapter, but for now I have only completed these three.

Let me know what you think

Well, if you are not re-working photos into drawings, then you are quite possibly a fully-fledged genius with photographic visualization and the beginnings of some techmique.

If you are basically tracing and tweaking, then you're still pretty good.

Either way it would be a simple matter to improve as you obviously have talent, plus the knack of giving board members the type of images they seem to want to see.

At the risk of accusations of solipsism I find the single biggest problem in beginning manga style work is in knowing how ro simplify the subject matter appropriately. If you're familiar with traditional Oriental painting - and I'd specifically include caligraphy - the essence of it all is economy of line.
The masterful line gives all the essential emotional information without cluttering the plot up. Look at pretty girl pictures by any of the manga greats. They capture beauty and sexuality with the minimum number of perfectly-positioned pen strokes. I, on the other hand, have to generate each stroke by sculpting a pencil road for it to condense and focus itself from. When I can just lay down that one line, then I will consider myself master. I suppose it's practice; but it is difficult to know what to practice. I personally have made the greatest improvement by working totally without any reference material, and that means no photographs or other reference images anywhere in the process, either worked into the image or visible nearby while I am working.

The next problem, once you stop attempting to render a photograph is getting properly inside the manga idiom. Let's face it, tracing a photograph will never produce the unrealistic yet correct proportions of good manga and anime so it's best to abandon that idea completely. Put some practice time into sketching.doodling chibi. I think that there is the magic key. Lots of chibi without looking at reference. This also helps to fix the next problem that I, at least, have. Too much detail.

If you put detail, in the conventional drawing sense, into big-eyed characterizations, you will simply end up with groteques and monsters. Look at how mouths are drawn. one line. maybe three or four, rarely more but the right lines in the right places. AS soon as you look at a photograph, you will see all sorts of irrelevant lines and tones and colours that make it far harder to see the relevant lines that your imagination can produce. It's a lot easier to eat s plate of spaghetti than spaghetti from a plate that's also coverd in string. Clear your plate. Clear your mind. Clear the next obstacle.

Of course this could just be horseshit, but it's certainly correct and seems to be working for me. Enjoy

edit - dupe line removed,

Thanks, that is good advice and I will try to take it on board. I can see what you mean about different styles of drawing lines, and would love to put the skills I have with a pencil or pen and ink onto the computer. My preferred artwork is landscapes, and I have created a few decent watercolours that I am quite proud of. I tried drawing people as well, and I quite enjoyed it, but as with landscapes, I need to be able to see the subject in front of me before I can draw it with anything resembling accuracy... and I'm quite picky about realism and accuracy of detail.

However, transferring that onto the computer is difficult, firstly because using a mouse to draw a digital line is nowhere near the same as drawing with a pencil, it's too neat and tidy for starters. Then secondly, I don't have one of these all singing all dancing art programs... just an old copy of MS Paint, and a free art app on my iphone. The other thing I'd love to have is a scanner, so I could put my hand drawn work onto my PC and upload it for you to see... but that is unlikely to happen in the near future. I don't wish for this to be an excuse as such, but we all have to work to our limitations.

You are right in thinking that I have used other pictures for ideas in a few of the above... the first few we just practice attempts, while the last three were intended solely for the purpose of adding a little illustration to my fictional writing. The use of pictures was not traced directly from one to the other, but with the original open on one side of the screen and my blank MS Paint window on the other I have copied some ideas from it as I would from a live subject. I don't doubt that this is a form of plagiarism, but I'm doubting the original artists would be willing to stand up in court and argue over the copyright. Going with your advice though, I will go back to trying to create the next few from my own warped imagination. I will post them up here to show you how they turned out.
