I'm guessing it's taken from Samael, the actual name of Lucifer Morningstar.

Who is Lucifer Morningstar?

BTW Samael was some ugly-looking Helldog-thing in the movie Hellboy and also a very bad-ass midboss/ final-dungeon-level type enemy in most Shin Megami Tensei games.
Or let's take an excerpt of the guide for Nocturne:

Samael's name has the somewhat contradictory meaning of "Splendorous poisonous
one." A very mysterious and confusing angel from Hebrew mythology. Samael
appears as a huge winged snake, and while being an angel is a leader of demons
as well. Some interpret him as being a fallen angel, and later Jewish
interpretations have him as the Serpent in the Garden of Eden myth, but that
does not match up with a lot of his descriptions within earlier Hebrew
scriptures. The common belief among mythologians is that he originated as a
"good" angel and over time evolved to an "angel representing the cruel/vengeful
aspect of God" to outright "demon."

First part of "Lucifer Morningstar" should tip ya off.. Its another name for satan aka the devil

Samael has so many storys, meanings and descriptions about it that I've found it best to simply pick and choose what works best for you. Some see it as the ultimate force of evil in existance. Some as the shadow side of what we call God. Others still as simply an another angel, doing its duty as the tempter and tester of mankind. Everything Ramhart said is true, to a given extent, but don't stop at just that.

Personally, my favorite interpritation is in the Lucifer books from Vertigo Publishing

I assumed he meaning Sammael from the wheel of time, due to his spelling of it.

Sammael is one of the 8-9 Forsaken from the series, they're basically men/women who were powerful mages that ended up betraying humanity for the dark one.. great great book series.
