First attempt at coloring |
Quote |
Hi Everyone,
I was inspired by some of the other posters here and decided to try to some colorization. Unfortunately I suck at 2D work so this was really hard to do...
Well, I'm not completely happy but then it is my first try. Let me know what you think, suggestions appreciated.

Nice work
Much better than what I could ever make.
I'm not an art critic so I don't have any good suggestions or comments.
however when I looked at the black & white pic I imagined the girl as a redhead and not blonde. maybe it would look better like that, not sure

Thanks kendo
Perhaps something like this then? That was easy to change since still I got all the different colors in different layers.
Any other suggestions?

It's good to have different colors in different layers, for exactly that reason. The most glaring probably I see your colorization is that the lines are all blurry, where as in the original they're clean and crisp.

Hi feather,
Your quite right. Turned out I had left a transparency in the ink layer. When multiplied with the color layers which has imperfect boundaries it introduced a strange blurring effect.
I think it is a bit better now. At least when I compare my ink layer with the original they seem to about the same blurriness. Unfortunately the original scan is not very high resolution. Also I found it quite tedious to remove the black & white shading from the image to recover the original ink drawing. Might have been better to just redraw everything over the scan.

Well, it is a little clearer. But this is more what I'm talking about --- you can see I've preserved all of the original artwork, even the low quality that can be seen particularly in the hair. This isn't necessary of course; the gradiant in the blouse can be removed or downplayed, or you might color the lines in the hair, as you did, but you can see what I mean, I hope --- the artists work is basically unchanged, there's just a little color added.

Yes, I can see what you mean. However that is not at all what you pointed out in your first reply. Leaving the original artwork fully preserved was not my main priority anyway, but I realize that probably might be rubbing lots of artists the wrong way
However your image looks dark and gloomy and not at all what I was trying to achieve. Which I did not quite master anyway I might add
Well, no matter. Appreciate your critics and suggestions.
I think the main issue is that I tried to undo the grey shading in the hair and in the blouse, this was probably a bad idea since I did not have the patience to do it perfectly. Took ages. I should probably have found a better way to color these parts without changing the original. Might give it another try tomorrow, have to get some sleep now.

You're right, I said something entirely different; my point was that the lines are still clean and crisp.
