Post Cyclic Redundancy Check Quote
If someone can explain exactly what the phrase "Cyclic Redundancy Check" means, I would greatly appreciate it. I keep getting this error message when I'm trying to copy images from a data DVD I made to my hard drive.
It's bloody annoying.

it means the dvd is probably wrongly burn...

If you try to unpack an archive from the dvd, it means the archive is damaged, try to use recovery finctions then.
If it happens on data that is on the disc directly, then I would recommend cleaning the dvd (remember, don't use circular motions when cleaning it) and in the end if all fails using isobuster (google it).

Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) is a bit error detection scheme. If you see error messages about it, your data has become corrupted either at the media or during transfer.

Well, thanks for the pointers, all.
It's just a little frustrating because after I burned the DVD in question, all the data worked perfectly. Took a little shy of an hour to copy all the data to the hard drive, but it worked. This second round, on the other hand ... not so much.
I'll look into your suggestions ... hopefully they'll help ... I lost my fanart folder and all the pretty little pictures there as a result.

EDIT: Now I'm getting another error that says the computer can't read from the disk when I try to copy or open some of the files. Anyone else think it might be a hardware thing?

It's rare, but when you buy cheap blank DVD's (especially reburnable ones) the data can become more and more unstable over incredibly short periods of time. This occurs in home-burned CDs and DVDs because the burn is not done in the same way that mass-produced discs are (though the difference escapes me right now). I used to think that CD's and DVD's where more durable than that, but that is actually pretty far from the truth when it comes to private burners. Hopefull the data hasn't become corrupt through age.

In short, spend the extra money when buying blanks and avoid at all costs reburnable discs because they are the least stable.

Yeah, it was like a Memorex or something. And I burned the disk only 2 or 3 weeks ago ... frustrating as hell.
Anyway, the collection's slowly rebuilding on its own.

I always use Taiyo Yuden discs for any important data. For example Plextor re-brands Taiyo Yuden products.

Okay, this is the height of embarassment. I found out what the problem was ... it was DIRTY!! Wow. That's just, like, wow. I don't think there's any other way to say it. I looked at the bottom of the disk, and it was covered in crap. I cleaned it, and now no errors. Sad. Just sad.

Something else that may help is to make sure your DVD Writer and Hard Drive that your burning the date from aren't on the same IDE Cable. Or if you have a SATA Hard Drive, forget I said anything. Razz

IDE and Serial ATA (SATA) are types of interfaced used for computer drives.

IDE is the standard interface for CD drives, and the old standard (though still widely used) for hard drives.
Computers usually come equipped with 2 IDE channels. Generally speaking, harddrives are usually attached to the first IDE channel, and other drives go on the second.
It is possible however to put a CD drive on the same channel as your harddrive (in fact some computers may come equipped with only one channel, though I can't recall ever seeing this, I suppose it's possible), however this is not recommended as there is a chance of data being transferred from one drive to another being corrupted when using a single IDE channel.
Generally speaking, this isn't a problem for 2 harddrives on the same channel, as the computer can compensate for any corruption by simply resending the data, but because the burning of CDs/DVDs is a much more precise process these kind of errors cannot be corrected, and your data will remain damaged.

SerialATA is a new standard interface for harddrives, introduced in 2003, boasting faster transfer rates and things like that. Because it's seperate from the IDE channels there can be no interference.

It should be noted that I'm completely talking out of my ass, so anyone's welcome to correct me if I'm wrong.
