Decided to use some Halloween-type colors for the clothing on this one.

The bad thing with manga is that the halftone patterns are ugly to color.
That's why you should follow what I did and start vexeling and color it using own techniques...
The only limit is... pixelation... ><

Vexeling? I'm not familiar with that term but would it happen to be something like this?

It's a technique I sort of stumbled upon and it has some interesting potential although I agree that it is pretty pixelated (if this is what velxeling is). Basically what I did is adjusted the contrast to the point where it was literally black and white and adjusted the brightness until I got the right balance in detail. From there I had to restore a few lines here and there using the original art as a template.

This is just the first stage-I'm going to try to add in shading and such in a second pass. I might possibly thicken up some of the lines and/or use a bluing effect to make things blend together better and look less pixelated.

Edit: I tried another variation of the technique to quickly add the shading. In this example I haven't yet "touched it up" fully. I just wanted to upload what I had to show what I came up with for a quick shading possibility. Basically I did the same thing as I did for the main lines, just this time I lowered the brightness instead of bring it up, allowing me to bring out the shadows. I then brightened it up a bit, applied a Color Burn layer effect and toned down the opacity to 20%.

Another advantage of the technique is being able to limit the color pallet more easily.

Edit: Found a video on YouTube of Vexeling and while it doesn't exactly describe the process, it looks like it's a matter of using selection tools to try around different bits of an image manually-I don't exactly have the patience for something like that-although I suppose I could draw the line around the area like I usually do then use the magic wand to create a selection. I don't see where the element of pixelation comes in though because if you're doing it with selections you can technically extract vectors from the selections if you wanted to-or at least I can do something like that in Photoshop CS4.

In any case, the technique that I'm exploring now is kinda cool-even though it turns out its not vexeling. lol

Vexeling basically means making vectors and then rasterizing them.
Do not use the selection tool, use the pen tool.
See my topic's latest posts for samples of what vexeling can achieve.

Another colorization using the contrast technique-this time a loli version of a certain Final Fantasy 7 character. The second version adds a bit of blurring to make it a bit less pixelated-looking.

I always blur my lines after I finish vexeling, usually with something like 0.2-0.3
and use separate layers for each element/shade

Special Christmas colorized drawing. Strategically placed title card to block out the fact that her hand was completely covered by the original title bit and I couldn't possibly re-draw it with any level of accuracy. lol

Interestingly, this also happens to be my 50th post.

I started doing a little work on applying my new techniques to Democratic Empire 2 and this has been the result.

It's based on the newer Saha translation and uses my technique of changing it to "pixel art" then re-adjusting it back to a form that looks more like a proper drawing.

Edit: Fixed the sky in the middle panel since the "dots" looked really weird-so I erased the dots and added a shading gradient.

I refined the process a little for the next page I worked on (an art page) and eliminated more of the original shading from the first page I worked on. I keep shading only in places where it helps add some texture (like the wood in the backgrounds). The shading on the bridge was a bit tricky since it adds to the texture but the way it looks it a bit too extreme so I made a few adjustments to balance things out.

I also added new text so it doesn't look quite as blurry.

Now that I've figured out the basic process I think I'll be using the other pages should be a little bit easier to deal with.

I'm posting the lower quality "web" versions of the pages this time around. Higher quality files will be included in a zip package when and if I get this new version done.

Since the Saha translation doesn't translate the art pages I had to go with the inferior quality translation I used for the original colorization. I also decided not to go with the cloud effect on the background this time around.

Edit: Finished another art page (text to be added later).

I also plan on removing the texture from the pink bits on Mikoto's hair since it's more trouble than it's worth to get a texture that doesn't always look particularly good anyway.

Edit2: Another revision to Page 13-fixed the pink bits as explained earlier. I also changed the text-instead of using new text I just copied the original text on top and sharpened it up slightly. This should be the last revision by I'll go ahead and say that nothing's officially "finished" until I have the whole thing done and pack it all together.

A couple more pages-I might also be going back to an older project that I'd started up earlier (but never finished) and apply my new techniques to it.

On these pages I attempted some decensoring-although I'm not entirely confident in the results.

Edit: Added a little preview of what I'm starting to work on-it's a bit tricky because there's some heavy shading on the first few pages. This is the basic black and white outline that I start out with before I begin adding color.
