A delete question? |
Quote |
Hi! Newbie here with a question I was hoping to get an answer to. I have financial files I want to delete completely from my computer, how would I do that? What would I need? Any help would be appreciated. I would think that this would be a real basic question, but I don't know where to turn to.

Financial files, yeah, sure.
Anyways, just use a any software that can do multiple wipes of a file.
There are many many program, just google it, the most widely used
is Eraser, download it here:
hxxp://eraser.heidi.ie/
I recommend you to use Truecrypt when working with sensitive information.

as sat said,
eraser will wipe a file up to 35 times making it virtually unrecoverable even by magnetic means.
Other programs such as East-tec eraser 2009 and Window washer by webroot can also do the same thing, and clean portions of your computer where sensitive data may be left. such as programs accessed, what you did with those programs, things on the clip board, your page file where your memory leaves it's footprint. ect.
I also advocate the use of truecrypt when dealing with any form of information that is sensitive.

What do you there think about CCleaner - hxxp://www.ccleaner.com/ ? This is able to delete - rewrite - any file up to 35 times too and not only a file, usage tracks and junk temp files too, what is the opinion of some IT tech there?

CCleaner can mess with important files of your system, as well.
You should really know what you are doing when using it.
I know a few people who made their system unbootable using ccleaner

If you need something like cc cleaner, find a torrent for window washer, it'll do a good enough job for you

If I were you, I would try eraser or window washer. Either one will get the job done for you. I would highly suggest staying away from ccleaner, because like Sat said, I too have seen it make a system unbootable when my mother tried it on her PC. And a word of advice... It's always a bad idea to store your personal info & financial files on your pc.
Hope this info helped
