Good day.
I would ask the forum to help in providing any articles pertaining to Translation Theory, or more specifically, Literary Translation Theory. (I feel some of my renderings may be abit TOO literal.  )

In my Country, Argentina, exists a Publishing House named Editorial Ivrea, dedicated to manga. Well, if you read a magazine published by Ivrea, and compares it with a spanish edition of the same manga, you will realize that they are very different. Beyond the difference of the spanish/argentinean slang, the argentinean version has a huge amount of crude words. A character who says, in the original, "stop bothering me", in the Ivrea version says "get a fuck out here you motherfucker". Why? Because the target of Ivrea are teenagers, and the teenagers from Argentina had a very coarse vocabulary. So, the people of Ivrea put the same coarse words in the mouth of Rurouni Kenshin, Ranma Saotome, or Shinji Ikari. And the worst of it: Ivrea started to publish in Spain, and the same characters, once again, talk different. New markets needs new sacrifices.
That is the reason because I started to learn some japanese words. Perhaps someday I can read the japanese mangas in japanese.

Even manga like kenshin on ranma actually have swearwords in japanese.
What phalos is asking,
should "KUSO" be translated as "Damn!" or "SHIT!"?

Golgo is actually quite on the mark.
Golgo is giving a good example of cultural/demographic changes that a translator (or the editing house) can make because of different demographics.
For example, would it be feasible for a translator to translate something like 'itadakimasu' in this form into English, or look for something with the same meaning (saying something before betaking of food) in the English? "Let's eat!", "I'm starved!", "Don't mind if I do!", etc...
-Let's say the series Naruto. The main character likes Ramen noodles. I watched a few Japanese eps, and (like most other media) before one eats, one may often say 'itadakimasu'.
--When you see a translation of that same scene, (or the same group, doing many occurances of said scene) you may notice that this term is not always Term X
(In this case, "I am receiving!") but rather the sense of this term thru the Target culture.
(In the American case, it may be "I'm starving!", "Time to chow down!", etc etc...)
As for vulgarity, it is very difficult in ANY language.
'A fag' may refer to a gay person, or a cigarette depending on where you are.
Same langauge, different context.

I was not complaining about the coarse words. If Rumiko Takahashi made her characters speach in that way, great. But sometimes those wise publishers changed the meaning of complete phrases. I have another example. In one volume of Ranma 1/2, Ranma makes fun of Akane (as always) using a phrase very popular in Argentina, because a comediant of our TV says it all the time (which phrase is this, doesn't matter. Ask any argentinean about the meaning of "ooooooosooo!!!") Now, how could Ranma learn that joke? If you hear Kenshin asking "Whats up Doc?", you think in Bugs Bunny, not in Kenshin. Some people could call it a creative license, but for me it is a swindle.
