windows 8 has none of these menus, i want to do it myself, did it in win 7 but can't figure it out in win 8, using windows 8.1 looking into control panel we have, language as a separate menu, and region as a separate menu, maybe change it in both?

@Solgath try "Region" > "Administrative" tab > "Change system locale..." button, select Japanese, press OK and reboot when asked.

p.s. if you re-read Greenback's post, it tells you what to do in the Language and Region sections too. Razz

man i've always hated applocale, it never worked right for me. In Windows 7 (64 bit), if i change language to japanese and restart, that language stuff shows up on the bottom right toolbar and it keeps reverting back to English no matter what I do, thus I can't open the program I want. I can keep setting it to japanese but as soon as I start doing anything it just reverts back to english. Plus I couldn't get rid of that annoying language bar on the bottom...even if i went back to english Sad - i had to do a system restore to get my computer back to normal and get rid of that crap. Argh.

gohawks78: the little icon in the taskbar is used for the keyboard layout and is set at a per-window-basis (meaning you can write in one window japanese, in another english...). It will show as long as more than one keyboard type is "installed". To remove it simply remove the unneeded languages.
This has nothing to do with the locale btw.
if your locale is set to japanese it should display a ¥ instead of \ in file paths.

for Applocale I recommend the HF pAppLoc installer - its easy to use.
no annoying popups (also possible with a patch with the original AppLoc)
start your games per rightclick -> Run with Japanese locale
Run with Japanese locale as administrator is also possible (needed for some games since vista; if your game asks for write access use this - or it will reset the locale)

If you don't want to use Applocale or set the system locale you can also use the Windows XP Compatibility Mode with a japanese XP - still works with Windows 8.1 using VMLite. (naturally that only works with games supporting Windows XP)

In case anyone is running Windows 10 & are struggling on occasion to get something to start, I've been using a programme called Locale Emulator for the past few months and it's worked flawlessly for me on the dozen or so games I've tried.

Once unzipped, run the LEInstaller and then run LEGUI from the same folder afterwards to set the language & region. Once done it adds an option to run a game etc when you right click the shortcut etc. It's pretty much that simple and hasn't required me to change any settings on my system (I have downloaded the Japanese language pack just in case it was needed)

I've attached the latest vewsion to this post (only 88kb, will unpack to about 760kb) for easier sourcing, but if you want to go to source to check or download then the link is here: hxxps://github.com/xupefei/Locale-Emulator/

There's two ways I generally run japanese games.

1. Locale Emulator, as was posted MadChesterManc. The benefits to using this is that it usually always works and if something doesn't work, usually checking to see if there is a newer version will get it to work. It's very quick and convenient to use it as opposed to changing locale settings. The downside is that the japanese text may still be unreadable, after all it is in Japanese and most here probably don't understand Japanese. But for a game that has little to no text, or for cases where you don't care what is being said, this is a good tool. In the right click menu you can open up a dialog box to create a shortcut to the desktop before running, for easier access. There's also a companion program called LEshortcut that creates the shortcut (or edits one if you choose that instead) file in the same folder as the game exe. It's not necessary to create a shortcut either way but I choose to do so because I have so many Japanese hentai games that finding the one I want to play is a bit difficult. So I started using a program called Launchbox. Launchbox is technically a frontend for multiple emulators, and I do use it for that as well, but you have a lot of freedom with it to basically add any game you want to it. You can even tell it to launch swf or movie files if you want. So I look up the game on dlsite or whereever if it's not on dlsite and I find the name and get the images so these games show up like a normal game. I use the main image as the box art and tell it to make the other 3 images "fanart - Backgrounds" so when I click on the game it shows a random one in the background of the program window. It doesn't take long to add a game, far less to do that than to find where I put it, because many of them have japanese folder names.

Anyway, the second way is

2. Agth which is a text hooker. I use this so I can at least have an idea of what is being said in the games. It works fairly well for visual novels and for rpgmaker games. Don't use it for rpg maker MV though. Those are very different, however there is a different tool that can do basically the same thing for them. Usually, all it takes to hook the text is to right click the game you want to translate and choose to create a shortcut file. You then right click the shortcut and choose properties. Where it says target you edit that. AN example is F:\R18\Games\somejapanesegame\game.exe and before that I put C:\agth\agth.exe /r

The latter part of that is the argument. /r just tells agth to apply locale emulation and is one of two ways to do so. /r (or R, capitalization doesn't seem to matter) does it the agth way and some minor visual glitches are possible, though I can't seem to recall any time I have seen them. /l does it using applocale, which I don't think works well on newer OSes. I've never tried using /l as I don't use applocale and haven't in a few years. Wolf RPG games need a few more arguments that I usually find success with. I just add /x3 /kf /ks2 as well as the usual /r. Some games require h-codes which I've never been able to get to work unfortunately in agth.

Anyway, once you successfuly hook the text you need to find out what thread the text you want is in. In most of the rpg maker vx or vx ace games I've tried it's been the third choice listed. Really just check them one by one until you find the right thread, because the correct one will show all of the same text though maybe not as neatly as the game since it tends to lump things like responses to questions or menu items together. Once you get the text, you copy what you want or use the automatic text copy function found in agth's menus or automatically applied if you use the /c argument in the shortcut file. If you have the choice in the game, set the text speed as fast as you can. If not, it's not the end of the world, but agth might split up dialogue into different paragraphs, usually you want each line of dialogue to be a paragraph. And also, there's a configurable delay, defaulting to 150 ms. If you find it's not copying all text of a line to the clipboard and only the last part set the delay higher.

Now, there's a couple other tools that are useful for playing japanese games.

1. sjisunzip. It might not matter what tool you use to launch a game if the files the game needs are named differently from what it expects. You've probably seen Japanese text when it's all messed up. That's called mojibake, and while it's not always a problem in game if you can't understand the text anyway (though I've played enough japanese games to start picking up a bit of things such as menus and responses, Mojibake can sometimes lead to all text looking the same), but a game could be looking for a file named somejapanesefilename.mp3, when that file got extracted as somemojibakename.mp3 The game won't know what to do and it could lead to errors or the game outright crashing. Now, the issue with file names being messed up is usually due to the archive being a .zip instead of a ,rar or .7z. Both of these archive formats use unicode to store filenames, but zip archives don't, they use whatever locale settings you use, so some Japanese person or company archives a game that has japanese filenames on their japanese computers and they get use japanese encoding for the japanese text (usually shift-jis) to store the filenames. Even if you have japanese fonts, your computer will try to extract the japanese filenames using western encoding from zip files. The two ways to fix this are changing your computer locale to Japanese. And the other is to use a little program called sjisunzip. Put the file and program in the same folder, and drag the zip file over the exe. It usually works for me, it extracts the files to the folder they are in. Rar and 7zip archives don't need the tool. They'll correctly extract the files regardless. The only time they won't is when it wasn't archived correctly, or rather these files were likely extracted from a zip archive so they had the mojibake characters and then these files were archived in rar or 7zip format.

Some of the earlier games I extracted ended up with mojibake characters. Sometimes it was just the exe that was affected and I would change the name to fix the issue, but some games had other files and they couldn't just be renamed to be fixed unless I knew what they were supposed to be.

2. Atlas. It's a translator for japanese. You can also use google translate, but google translate doesn't have clipboard detection. So basically I launch a game using agth, which hooks the text and copies it to the clipboard, I also open quickatlas, and tell that to monitor the clipboard and automatically translate the text. The result is a much more convenient way to play the game if I need to know what is going on. At;as is not perfect though. Like Google translate or bing or whatever you use, it's still machine translation, it seems to be a bit worse actually than Google translate on that front. But it's convenient, far more convenient than using google translate on many many lines of dialogue in nearly real time (there's a short delay).

3.ITH. It's am alternative to agth. I used it because a game needed an hcode and I couldn't get agth to work with them. ITH worked for it, but I personally prefer AGTH.

4. Launchbox. Like I said above, it's really intended for emulated games. Adding emulatots and roms are fairly simple and convenient. But I also use it for my hentai games. It's far easier to find a game I like if there's an image and an english name.

I've read that all. ^
I deserve a cookie!

Ok, maybe Balthier deserves a cookie as well... Laughing

'Ntleas' may help where 'Locale Emulator' fails (doesn't happen that much), or the game starts but the ingame text is mojibake after starting. (similarly, where Ntleas doesn't work or start the game, Locale Emulator may). At least these are my experiences on Win 8.1.

Also, if it doesn't matter, just change your system locale to Japanese - will take care of 99.99% of the compatibility issues. No need for context menus, applications, etc. In the good old days of Win 7, was running it in Jap locale for months, without any problems. Only downsides were that if you wanted to install something it will try to do it in moonrunes. xD And you would have to get accustumed to the character '¥'... But hey, you can always change locale back for the time being (installs)!

Now that I recently switched up to 8.1, I am trying to play the do-not-switch-locale game, which meant 'Ntleas', 'Locale Emulator'. And indeed, 'sjisunzip', Regarding which: drag and drop the .zip file on the sjisunzip.exe in Windows Explorer - it took me a while to find out (Using Total Commander mostly). Life is harder... Laughing
Just.Switch.To.Japanese.System.Locale. If you can. Makes it a lot easier. lol

There is ITHVNR and VNR as an alternative to agth for those who want translations with their h-games. With 'Translation Aggregator', they provide a hefty machine TL service. Better than Atlas alone - though you would still need it...
Very easy to find how-to manuals on them too.

2 cents.

For those who are having difficulty running Japanese games:

1- Install the Japanese language pack
2- restart the machine
3- install the emulator locale hxxp://pooi.moe/Locale-Emulator/ restart the machine
4- Download SBapplocale is similar to the app locale hxxp://www.steelbytes.com/?mid=45
5- Unzip it in the game folder and run it as administrator
6 - Right click on the game and run it with the locale emulator, selecting the Japanese language.

Ready works without freezes and perfectly on windows 10
