Post LAH RPG using RMXP-[Continued] Quote
The project proposed by Azrael has already been accepted by enough people (in my opinion) to get the project started. I hope to bring some momentum to it, so if Azrael doesn't return to this project it wont just die and be forgotten.

Progress ~ Back to the drawing board! ~

DETAILS:

The game is quickly becoming too big for RPG Maker. I haven't completely ousted the idea of using it yet, since the game is not yet written in stone so here is the link: [RMXP original] Free trial

The official meeting place for discussing this project is: [MSN] Windows Live Messenger

The Game:

My vision for this game is an open ended side-scrolling Adventure game with RPG elements. It will have a real-time combat system and plenty of skilled platforming puzzles. Like many RPGs of the olden days, I see a line of characters following behind you in your adventures. Except instead of a rag-tag group of warriors, you'll be calling upon the skills of A rag-tag harem of lolis. Big surprise there, right? Despite the ridiculousness of it all, the game will have a relatively serious storyline. To give you an idea of what I'm going for -- Focused, yet silly and cute with plenty of suggestive humor. Fan service will be your reward for being a thorough player. What I'm not going for is half-assed porn. This will not be that kind of game.

My three greatest 2D inspirations are Thousand Arms (RPG), Cave Story (Adventure Platformer), and the Castlevania series (Adventure Platformer). If you want to help make this game come to life, I highly recommend playing (and beating) Cave Story. This is what the game will essentially look and feel like, except with the action you'd expect from a Castlevania game. There will be more short range weapons, basically, and the graphics will be more tailored towards my style.

Thousand Arms Is still an amazing example of how a dating sim can be melded with other game genres without coming off as too heavy-handed.

DEVELOPMENT TEAM:

I (Anonym) am a writer and an artist. I'll be handling the story, the dialogue and the character designs (sprite art included).

What I need are spriters that are willing to handle non-character pixel art. Even novice artists can put together convincing looking buildings, vegetation, etc. with pixels so if you can draw at all and you're interested in the game, please do consider volunteering.

More importantly, I need scripters that know how to code a game like this. This is not something I know how to do at all, and the game will stall and nosedive without some know-how here. Any and all volunteers would be greatly appreciated.

Keep in mind that until the story is complete, the game mechanics are fleshed out and the game engine is chosen I have no work for anyone. Feel free to make suggestions and check in with me in the mean-time.

Lead Developer: Anonym

Item Sprite Design Artists (Indoors and Outdoors): Several needed

Scripters: Need as many as possible.

Please reply to this topic with a Pen-name, the position(s) you intend on fulfilling and your name will be added to the list. Only the above positions are required.

NOTES[05/25/09]:

This is a short update.

Cave story took Pixel 5 years to finish and the hard work shows. Our game is on a similar scale except with more advanced graphics so you can be sure it'll take at least that long or longer. I know many of you (and myself) will lose and regain interest many times before it's all over. My hope is that once work starts becoming available there will be someone willing to take over at any given time. That way, so long as there is a desire for this game to exist, it will eventually become a reality.

I'll do my part by creating the best foundation for the game as I can. The rest will be a team effort.

Let's do this!

Agenda:

Story

Game Mechanics

Character Graphics

Game Engine chosen.

Reassess.

Any suggestions at all you might have for any part of the game are welcome and needed. Please keep checking this post for updates at your leisure.

Sounds overall good. We should decide upon a plotline first.

Seems most content is leading toward a fantasy setting so I think any proposal should have that as a restriction.

We should also pick 1 plotline and work from there as the basis. Other elements from other plotlines might be able to be integrated in, but we shouldn't try to just to please that person. If adding a neko vampire is going to sidetrack things, it shouldn't be done.

I have worked on developing games and mods for games for some time and the first and trying to mesh everyone's idea equally into one just creates more problems then not.

Also, you need to have logic with your things. It can, and will, be logic based upon that world, but it needs to make sense. If you have an amulet that dispels magical enchantments, it needs to dispel them all, or give a concrete reason why it can't. And don't make too many exceptions either.

As for myself, I have my own ideas and would like to see a more darker/occultish element, especially as the game progresses, but as I've come late to the discussion...

I think it should be roughly defined first. Especially the length and the locations. Maybe a map.

As for characters, it sure would be a honor to play, but I guess it would be better to use a character who doesn't exist...

To Jinnai:

Just to clarify, I never intended for many plot lines to be meshed together into one. The purpose of this thread is simply to make sure that everyone has the same software installed on their computers and know what they are supposed to do specifically.

Instead, I urge people to think of 1 or more plot synopsis that they would like made into a game. They can then share it with the rest of the team, which we will vote on.

I am very happy that someone with game development experience has decided to give their input. My only question for you, though, is are you interested in officially being credited to the project? How much time you spend working on it is up to you of course. If you are interested, I'll add your name to the list.

By the way, you are far from being late. In fact, you're right on time.

To Sat:

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a lot of people here that would like to play as you, however that completely depends on the gender of the protagonist. The gender will have huge implications as to what kind of game this is going to be. If we do go the male route, however, I see no reason why there shouldn't be a "Sat mode" as previously suggested. Just for the record, are you interested in being added to the list?

As a final note, I'd like to point out that I have updated the title post. Check out the notes section for some important updates.

The problem is, I have created rpgs in the past and have some experience (Mind you not with RM, as I kinda despised it before, because everyone made rpgs from pre-made things and didn't have to do almost anything, I used programs that needed you to create your sprites and backgrounds and dynamic yourself, well you get the point)

You probably know, I have terribly many projects with lah, translations, repairs, and lah itself.
I dont want to be "counted on" here, but I will help if it is ocassionally needed.

Sat mode would be easy, extracting the Noel sprite from Star Ocean 2...

I don't see that as a fault of RM. It is the fault of the people making the games. You can choose to make everything from scratch then import it in. Fortunately, that's precisely what I intend to do, with some help, hopefully.

As for you, I say join! In all honesty, I have every intention on taking the entire project from start to finish all by myself. This game will be made. With this in mind, you and everyone else on the team can donate even the tiniest bit of time to the project and make a huge difference for me.

The more people that join in, the more universally appealing this game will end up being. I can only make a game that I am sure I'd enjoy playing.

Right now, as you know I'm working on story ideas. If you have something jumping out at you, pm me with it. Like the topic says, in a week from today this project is going to move into production no matter what.

P.S. The sat mode thing sounds fun. I'll at least come up with one story line that can support your sprite and see how it holds up.

Indeed. Picking the gender is probably the first thing. It will determine the flow and style of the entire game to follow. While it is possible to have multiple-gender options for RPGs, such games tend to lack as in-depth plot as efforts to make things gender neutral or gender dual development take away from plot.

Indeed having more original content is better, especially for models of important NPCs and main character. However we can also use cameo appearance models as well and a lot of stuff like town graphics and the like are generally better ripped and modified for our own use, unless you can find very good and dedicated sprite developers.

I know the title post is a heafty read so just as a reminder. Even if you have only 5 minutes to devote to this project it would be an awesome help to me. If you want to do so, tell me, and tell me what it is you'd like to do. Would you be interested in doing alittle scripting? Planning out events and npc scripts can be a pain in the ass for me so I could use any help I can get.

As a quick update, I'm probably a day away from having a synopsis ready. I think I am onto something very good. Good enough that I almost cant bear to think of anything else. I'll hold onto the suspense until I get all the details cleared up. If it ends up not coming together towards then end then I guess it's back to the drawing board for me.

I hate when plot holes bring an entire story to a screeching halt...

Since you are the only 2 that have responded so far I'll add you both on as "general developers".

I suggest downloading RTP component when downloading the game.

As to bypassing the battle system, it is possible, however the work involved would require expert knowledge of the game and a large portion devoted to it.

Aside from the gender of the main character, we have several other core descions to make:

  • Game flow:
    • linear? AKA Thousand Arms, Lunar, FFX, etc.
    • open-ended? AKA Oblivion, Fallout, GTA, Uncharted Waters 2
    • lineal-divergant (new term i coined here): AKA Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, FFI - IX, XII
    • Parrallel storyline: AKA Star Ocean 2, Arcanum
    • other* (ones that don't quite fit any model above and are still RPGs): Breath of Fire: Dragonquarter, .hack
*BOF:DQ is linear but with the added thing where when you die or complete it with so good a score, you get access to more areas/cutscenes.
.hack is both linear and open-ended. It is not truely one or the other because you can play it just for the dungeon crawl, but to get more keywords, you need to progress through the story.
  • Combat, Eye-candy, Plot or Character focus?
    • Combat: If this is the case, a revamp of the engine might be possible. This type of game will mostly be based around a...less complex plot and little character development.
Good examples: Zelda, Dragon Quest 3, Final Fantasy 5, Grandia series
Bad examples: Brave Soul, Love-Hina SIMDATE RPG, Final Fantasy 1-3
    • Eye Candy: This isn't just limited to h-scenes, but everything. Better graphics, like everything else, is better. However, many modern rpgs (Final Fantasy especially) take this to the extreme and often end up having to sacrifice other elements.
Good examples (of those that don't just make their games for eye-candy, but use it when it matters): Lunar, Dragon Quest 8
Bad examples (those that overdue): Final Fantasy 10+, Grandia III
Bad examples (those that just had poor graphics when they needn't): Dragon Quest 7, FF8 (character models), FF7 (character models), Ephemeral Fantasia
    • Plot: There are 2 basics schools of thought here: simple and complex. No real room for much of a middle ground.
      • Simple: Easy plot to follow, no major suplots. Might have 1 or 2 surpise twists, but those are major turning points in the game.
Good examples: Lunar, Final Fantasy IV
Bad examples: just about every rpg out there............ Xenosaga III (Xenosage II would be on here but it's litterally half and half...and all the worse for it...the only game i know like it because of it's development history), Grandia III
      • Complex: These always have multiple layers running through them. While their might be a main character the game focuses on, their is no real main character in the game as far as all your controllable NPCs go. Many layers of complex ideas, no good vs. evil thing (though it is a us vs. them and maybe us vs. them who vs. them who vs. us), many subplots. These stories can overwhelm newbies, but are often considered masterful works if done right.
Good examples: Xenosaga I (Xenosaga II would be here...see above), Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Star Ocean 2 (lesser extent 1 and 3)
Bad examples: Kingdom Hearts series, Final Fantasy XII, Chrono Cross (but because it's budget was slashed 1/2 way through development)
    • Character Development: This means development of your party's NPC(s) outside of the plot advancement mostly. Some of it can be tied to that though. Most games focus on character development only of the main character and if there is a romantic interest, his/her interest instead of the whole group.
Good examples (overall): Lunar, Lunar 2, Chrono Trigger, Grandia 2
Good examples (main character): Baldur's Gate, Grandia
Bad examples (overall): most old-school D&D computer games, Final Fantasy 1 & 3
Bad examples (main character): Chrono Cross (see above...otherwise this would be good category), Dragon Quest 7 (if you don't use talk a lot)
    • How many party members, and are those party members interchangable?
IE: is this 1 man vs. the world (or kingdom or universe, etc), is it a group and if it's a group, can you change out your characters. If it's a group also, do you automatically get everyone, is there hidden characters and/or if you get 1, you can't get another?
      Are their guests possible?

The group one is almost as fundimental to answer as the protagonist's gender because it will determine the flow of how events go, especially if you decide to you guest characters from time-to-time since it will change the type of battle it is.

However the questions about grouping are also important. Numbers aren't ATM, but they are because if a chacacter can swap in/out characters they will min/max things. Also certain characters may be left out that you want in. It ultimately makes it harder to balance battles and easier for cheese tactics, especially if everyone is a generic copy of the other person.

Question about whether or not to have some characters appear when others don't or hidden ones can be answered a bit later, but earlier the better.
    • Overall idea of the plot, whether it's defeat the evil magician who kidnapped the princess or try to difuse the tensions between the 3 ancient feuding dynasties while a new threat lurks just beyond the boarders and another ancient god is about to awaken (all unrelated).
    • Given the rating of this game, the overall h-content style, what there is. This is somewhat subject to the protgagonist gender.
    • Start making up some laws, like why does magic work. Why are there monsters and why don't they enter towns, etc. The more you have the better the game will be.

As for my preferences for plot, given the above restrictions, i'd like to see a dark fantasy realm. I'd like to see the main protagonist as an arbitar (not just of good/evil), but what descions he makes along the way will affect things in the world around him. I don't like games where you must play the good guy. Tactics Ogre is a good example of an RPG where many choices aren't good are bad.

FE: Do you kill the innocent people who are sick and elderly, likely to die anyway, if it will unite your people to throw off a tyrant, or do you make someone else do it (because it will be done either way)? IE: are you willing to dirty your hands to achieve your goals.

wow....invalid session...never posted a message so long it kicked me off....anyway my msn is up.

Second, we must consider that every game has a target audience..., our target audience happens to be this forum pretty much exclusively....
I think you might have a wider audience than you know, if we can pull it off.

This also depends on the content: both h-content type/style and plot/storyline quality.

First of all, welcome back LAH xD.

To Jinnai: Wow, you pretty much covered the entire Game Development theory in one post. And I thought I was a heafty poster.

I dont really know what to address first, but because alot of it is sensitive information. It may at this point be time to start going to MSN. I'm eager to discuss my ideas with you. It'll make things much easier that I have already considered all of the things you listed here when coming up with my plot.

I initially intended on making more than one, but the one I came up with just jumped out at me and so I wont be making another. I'm eager to see what other ideas are out there.

Since there are only 4 days left to finish your story ideas, I'm going to ask that if anyone is actually in the process of writing, or plans on it, please PM me ASAP. If I dont get any indication in a day or 2 that someone is writing, I see no reason to continue waiting.

To GizmoTheGreen: I was hoping you'd say that! I'll just add you on as programmer since it's just vague enough to work!
