Actually crossing your eyes is the wrong method. It will make the background pop out. To view it where the foreground pops out at you is difficult indeed. You have to do just the opposite the eyes have to turn away from each other. The trick I find that works for me is to stare at the wall just to the side of the monitor and while still staring move my one eye towards the monitor screen. I will see the picture pop out properly than.

Depends on which image is right and which is left - these are designed for the crossed eye method. Using the other method makes the background forward and looks funny. If you were to swap the stereo pair, the divergent method would be the correct one (and also the proper pair for a stereoscope or viewmaster - I have tinkered with some of these myself).

I've found the best way to view these particular images is to cross your eyes until the two images meet in a blurry form, then sort of relax your eyes until the detail comes through.
