Uhh, kuso (糞) as "shit" is actually used by male characters in anime pretty often. It sounds more like "Kso" since they mostly say it very fast.

From what I've encountered, "Kuso" is a pretty versatile word. In its noun form, of course it means "shit", which is of course just a bodily excretion. Not really a swear per se., But it can also be interpreted as a more general expletive, meaning something like "Shit!" or "Fuck!" or even "Damn!" In this usage, it is more a feeling than anything else, a sense of frustration or aggravation. I'd say that in this context, it could easily be interpreted as a swear.
