Post Ona.Nina (FullMetal Alchemist) ENGLISH, Uncensored--I did it Quote
About a week of spending ALL my free time translating this from Japanese to English. I got a demo of a pretty good Japanese OCR program. I'm sure I'll translate more... but it's a 20 use demo. It costs $99, it'd be awesome if I and 9 other people from here could chip in $10, buy it and each get a copy. Don't know exactly how it'd work out but I'd be more than willing to try to arrange that if people are willing.

If/when I translate those last couple pages that aren't part of the story, I'll just post them up here on this page.

There wasn't much censorship to begin with, but I removed most of what was there, there are a couple instances that I just didn't want to tackle.

It helps if you've seen episodes 1-7 of FullMetal Alchemist for this... This doujin takes place between 6 and 7. But it's not fully necessary. Just a clarification... She refers to him as "bigger brother" but he isn't related to her. He is the physically larger brother of 2 friends of hers.

Please leave feedback. This was hard work. Although, I enjoyed doing this, and I did it for myself more than for others.

I knew I was going to have to explain the program, but I was too tired last night to do so. It's Kanji OCR v.2.0 made by Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. their website is hxxp://www.pspinc.com but I can't find this product on their website at the moment... The place I downloaded this from had a list of Japanese OCR programs and linked right to the official page for buying this as well. I'm sure this can still be purchased! And I've searched long and hard for a crack to this, but couldn't find one.

The annoying thing about this program is that the images must be 2 color black and white, and can only be bitmaps. If you just take any old page and reduce it to B&W, the characters will then probably be way too crappy for the program to OCR so you'll have to enlarge the image before making it B&W. I also suggest that before you save it as a bitmap, you edit the doujin page so that there's a nice big box around the set of characters (blocking off the roundness of the word bubble) so that the program doesn't get confused by the stuff around the word bubble and put gibberish there.

Then open the image with Kanji OCR and make a box around the sets of text by clicking and dragging a shape to select it. Then make sure to push the button to tell Kanji OCR which direction the text is going (horizontal or vertical) then hit the read button.

Unfortunately you'll then get text like the following:

ƒj[ƒi‹CŽ‚¿—Ç‚¢?
–l‚̃`ƒ“ƒ`ƒ“
‹CŽ‚¿—Ç‚¢?

you'll have to copy and paste that into a notepad text document and save it as .txt. Then open that in MS Word making sure that when you do so, you tell MS Word that it is "Shift-JIS" encoding which is one of the ones for Japanese.

Once that is done, you'll get actual Japanese characters! But you should first compare the characters to those in the bubbles to make sure it's all correct, this program still isn't perfect of course and you might need to manually insert some characters. Thankfully, this program perfectly recognizes the complicated kanji characters (at least in all my time of using it) and I only needed to insert some hiragana and katakana characters from time to time.

Then you copy and paste those characters from Word into babelfish and google's translation service to get the input from both, because sometimes one will do a crappy job of translating while other times, the other will. Then make sure to use your brain and insert good sounding english dialogue, using the translation as the base, into the images.

NOTE: I can and probably will write a better tutorial later, I wrote the above summarization assuming you know your programs.

EDIT: Here is the official page for this item where you can get the demo http://kanjikit.net/kocr/index.htm Clicking the Order button gives you a page not found, but it appears you can order it by phone (I called and there was a menu option "for kanjikit etc. please press _")

And apparantly if you have "kanjikit" installed, you don't need to do all that encoding steps using MS Word... But kanjikit adds another $149 to the price of it... So I'm just fine and dandy doing those MS Word steps. And seriously... I'd love it if people(s) wanted to split this and everybody gets a copy. Hell, I don't even care if I have the official copy!

...no... unless you have a version I don't have. But that's very doubtful because I'm comparing the page numbers, so all the pages are there. Thanks though.

Well, if I am, please upload them, I don't want anything of mine to be incomplete after all. I got this on emule and if there are any pages missing... then I never had them to begin with. I noticed that the greyscale version of the cover says it's page 3. I was assuming page 1 is the front cover and that page 2 is the inside cover which was most likely blank. I've seen some books do this. The pages then go uninterrupted from 3 to 34, and page 34 is a credits page, so I assumed nothing was missing.

Aside from that, what do you all think of my work? I noticed a few mistakes after uploading it. Mistakes that some people might not even notice, like on onanina_05.jpg I accidently left all the text in caps, because originally I was going to have the entire thing in caps, but because that took more space in the bubbles, and because it looks just fine in mixed case, I changed my mind. I fixed these mistakes on my version here and was thinking of re-uploading it, but I might just wait until I get these missing pages, and until I translate the contents, credits and odd page with all that text before I rerelease it.

There are many other japanese OCR programs. Thing is, so many books are written in fonts that are only hardly or not at all recognisable...

EDIT:
URGH! Please get an editor. If you are planning on releasing more, get someone who puts in the text instead of you. The font, font size, boxes editing... it's horrible! If you allow, I will reedit it >_>

Was it too small, too big? I wanted a comic book font but was too lazy to search for one (I didn't know about Comic Sans when I did this). Normal Arial at the size I was doing it needed to be heavier so I used Arial Black. I like to have them centered, I noticed yours were not centered Sat. I don't like splitting words very much so I used a small font size. I put more thought into it than it may seem. Just give suggestions and I can do a better job, I'm a fast learner, but didn't think it was a bad job.

The wording is another thing, I also needed to make it fit into the bubbles, remember... one of the phrases "Your orgasm, let's do it together" would have been great if I had more room for a more eloquent message.

Input, especially yours, Sat, is valued and appreciated.

But please note... if you keep it at that font and size, you'd never be able to fit some of the stuff in the given bubbles... And what font is that anyway? It's rather nice for this, some characters look like Comic Sans, others don't.

Also... an editer, or more likely someone with whom I can regularly chat with to discuss the wording of some of these would be awesome, but most of my real life friends would not approve of lolicon. I'll add my messenger info to my profile in a bit.

As for the program, yes there are others, but this one did a pretty good job I think, most are very expensive and really, $99 isn't unreasonable (if there were a crack I'd use it though and I've searched all the best places for a crack, I don't think one exists). I have 2 other friends in real life who are also planning on chipping in $10, but one of them can't do so for about a month. Also Electricus, I don't want to talk you out of it, but try out the demo first and make sure you like it, it is a bit of an obstacle to actually get Japanese text out of it (as described in my mini tutorial) but I rather like this program now.

Okay, gotta run since its the morning, but only short.
That was just an example. I can show you how I would do it later today.
The white boxes over the text that wasn't in a box are horrible!
and yes, the font is bad too. I rather splitted the words than make the font too small, personally. But well, I have a solution to that, just wait til today afternoon, ehehe.

Um, I was implying you could use me as editor, dummy Razz
I have did this for people releasing translated manga for a while already.
(Also the comic is badly scanned and it needs to be fixed before translating)
Lastly, if you do not plan to releasing it elsewhere, I would be grateful for a LAH tag, you know it helps lure new users Wink

Well, hope I can fix what you don't like in the afternoon, but I gotta run to school now.

Ah yeah, those enematopoeias, (BOW WOW) are a bit too big too, and you forgot the "Aaaaaaaah!" too... >_>

If you're planning on translating more of them, I'll be glad to assist you and provide you help and ressources.

Sincerely,
Sat
