This takes me back a while, to my college days. I had a grand idea of designing a game from scratch. No, it's not loli and it's not even H. It'll take more a (kind of) dark approach to the multiple-path, multiple end VN genre. I had a VERY basic introductory storyline all written out in my head, but getting it down on paper is hard.

Anyways, I had named it "Raven Hollow" after the town and surroundings it takes place in. The first thing I decided to work on was fairly taxing in itself - drawing out all the maps I wanted to use. Then came early draft of the non-PC Character bios (these will be fleshed out later).

I took a break from the hard stuff to define some fun little variables, what triggers what end, character specific ends, bgm tracks and so on. Then the bulk of the work - still ongoing - the dialogue trees. I thought I'd lost all my work, and only dug it out last night. I have a heap to do. And I'll need help. Below I've listed what I'll do, what I'd like someone else to do and what I would appreciate input on. Depending on the replies, I'll start posting additional stuff.

Raven Hollow

Original Concept Date 24/6/08
Genre: Shoujo-Ai Non-H VN
Elements: Light/Dark personal attributes, exploration of surroundings, combat, magic, psychology

What I'll do: (and progress)
Dialogue script: 12% est
Preliminary character bios: 100%, fleshing needed
Maps: 100%, possible redraws
Coding: 0%, will start after dialogue trees, OpenGL, subject to change

What I'll need someone else to do:
Character Art (it takes me weeks to even produce a b/w sketch I'm happy with)
Map Art, though I have the general idea of what I want it to look like
.mod/.ogg music resequencing to make it sound different

What I'd appreciate help on:
Opinions, just don't insult the idea as it can turn into something good.
Input on elements you'd like to see (I will never rewrite this for sex, though there may be obvious flirting)
Other ideas.


As I said, I have no art for this yet, but I might post some early dialogue trees and non-pc bios depending. About the character art, well, I'll need it wrapped around the character bios themselves. The psychology aspect of the game should be obvious once I do a detailed story. What's hard is not giving away entirely what's going on, that'll be half of what I hope will be the fun.

I will only entertain serious responses to my request for help, which is why I'm going to finish off the dialogue before I even START coding. It will take a while, though. If you think you can fill any of what I ask for, please say so. And I do want opinions after I start posting dialogue.

P.S. About the dialogue, I do have to write for one PC and ten non pcs. Yes, Ten. When I finish I hope to have eleven endings, some will be derivatives from others. If I decide to start coding before the dialogue gets done, it'll be a little like this:

Alpha -> Demo Release 0.0A-> Bug Patch -> Revision of ideas/concepts/requests -> Implementation -> Alpha V2 -> Beta -> Demo Version 0.B1 -> Revision of other ideas -> Bug Patch/ Selective Implementation -> Demo Version 0.B4 -> Bug Fix, if necessary -> Demo Version 0.B5 -> Final revision of ideas/requests -> Remainder of requests -> Release V1 -> Bug fixes -> Possible update patch to include more ideas and rewrites.

I said I have a lot to do. Most of it writing. Why did I keep sticking in Bug Patch/Fix? Because I'm sure there will be errors to seal up, even in the release version.

Let me know. One last thing about the dialogue: Once I've written as far as the game proper, I'll post that.

EDIT: Nearing the end of script before game begins proper. Will upload on Tuesday, when...

Alright, so I'm hideously late with this update. There was a lot more work involved than I thought, and it's just the obligatory and ultimately skippable introduction dialogue. I have, of course, removed any ending influencers from this, it's just the script in the end. I've also reviewed my coding choices and it seems that Ren'Py would be my best choice, being practically made for VNs.

I have this done in two formats, a .lwp file for anyone who uses lotus or compatible software and a .doc file for everybody else. If you'd rather have a .rtf, let me know. It wouldn't be too hard.

Maybe it'll take you a while to wrap your head around, but while I was typing it out, it was fairly clear to me. Hope your head doesn't explode...

Have changed the previous versions to a single Plain text file.

Im nto sure how a doc file would be hard if they're both text. It's called copy and paste nya. Although I may be missing something here.

I might switch to OpenOffice as Sat suggested, but that's a little down the line.

Have switched the formatting to Text Unicode and attatchment post now has only one file.

@Catboy_J: That's a typo. It was meant to read "wouldn't" but somehow my brain shut down...

Damn and blast, my back is killing me! I have a couple of days off from everything, maybe I'll get some character bios done before Saturday. *goes digging through old notes for original guidelines*

By the way, I did say I will need character and background artists. I can plough all over the net for suitable pictures and edit them a little for some of them. As for FX and music, I have a couple of tracks in mind but they will need altering, which is why I want opionions of sound packages that have fully functional demo versions... Time based is okay, I just want the widest range of editing possible. Maybe the latest SoundForge. I should styop typing so I can this work started, Laughing

Sorry for the doublepost and the vast lateness of my update, but I have it finally done the best way I can think of. Included are a lengthy NPC BIO file, a legend text file to better understand some things I put in there and a (very) preliminary PC status screen -- which WILL require serious rework done... and will be done once someone draws me a shot of what I imagine the PC to look like.... and here's some facts to assist in that (in the style of the NPC BIO file).

EDIT II: I've been rather unwell for a while, so I probably won't be updating this for a little while yet.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. I'll rework the character bios to i nclude it. Some of them may work better that way. I'll also include it for the Player Character... Glad to actually have some ideas thrown at me Feather Kawaii 2

EDIT: Alright, have worked out a new alignment range design, will rework status screen then upload. Perhaps I will put in a background static of the title screen instead of a solid bluey colour.

The one thing to remember about the alignment system in this game is that it is not as clearcut as Fable's. This is NOT Good and Evil. This is Light and Dark. And now Chaotic Razz.

I can hear calls of "What's the difference" already. To put it very simply: Is Night-time Evil? Nope. Just Dark. Similarly, Daytime is not Holy. Just Light. That's the difference. Mareg (Grandia II) said it very well: "Not all Light is Holy, and not all Darkness is Evil."

... That I forgot to post the story -preliminary- that I had done. It's spoiler free. If It generates enough interest (and if I can get an artist to draw my characters) I'll begin coding the opening sequence of events.

Now The Story!

Essentially, the story centres around Rahne as she attempts to find herself in a land totally alien to her. However, it's not just the unfamiliarity that's strange. There seems to be only a smattering of buildings and a large wooded area with a skyline dominated by a spiral-shaped tower that seems as though it shouldn't be.

Background:

Rahne, an ordinary girl was walking home with her closest friend, Claire one pleasant Spring evening, talking about everything and nothing. At length, they had to part ways. Claire wonders would it not be better in the long run for her to skip her recital this once as there has been something weighing on her to tell Rahne for as long as she can remember. Deciding it would be and deal with the consequences later, she stops and turns.
Rahne is late for basketball practice and breaks into a run. One of the few things she takes seriously, it would actually be devastating to her to miss one match before the qualifying rounds next month. Running faster as though for her life, the sky opens up and it starts to pour down.
Almost there, Rahne is suddenly struck in the head from behind and crumples in a heap, the last thing she remembers is Claire's panicked voice calling out to her.
Waking up in a strange cell some time later with an ungodly migraine, she turns and notices a gaunt girl with wide eyes staring at her intently. There are just three questions Rahne needs answered:
How did I get here? Who the hell hit me? What in the name of Holy Shit is that smell?

It's been a while since I posted any progress at all.
I finished out writing as much by hand as I could a little while back, and started coding and conversing on the board for the engine I'm using; mostly to get tips on implementing a combat system. Actually incorporating it the hardest part -- calling it and returning to the main game with updated stats and the random combat system I want to put in will be so easy.

So, now that coding is under way, I may actually be a little more optimistic about obtaining the aid of an artist. Feh. Not much, but a little.

I'm getting close to a demo build version. I've gone ahead and starting doing modular programming instead of one big polyglot of a file.
The upshot of this is that any bugs I miss can be easily rectified without needing a full download again. The downside is that I still have to work out a universal "recall to previous script" to be used after every combat sequence. Having said that, I realise that I said the opposite the last time. This is now being said with more knowledge and experience.
About my need of an artist, I believe I have secured that problematic area.
I have a couple of ideas for my combat system. I was thinking perhaps something like the first six Final Fantasies or perhaps Shining The Holy Ark. Given the First-Person nature of the project, maybe STHA would be an easier perspective.
Out of what I've done, I've cleaned up some bugs and interminable loops and nonproperlydisappearing text. It was fading before, not vanishing. That's taken care of now. The BGM side of things mighn't be too hard, I have a few tracks in mind.

I've been unwell for the last while. But when I recover, I'll get to porting the combat system from the deprecated code to their more recent code of ATL. When that's fully integrated, I'll post up a demo version.
My sister in law said she'll draw for me when she has the time, and I've seen her work and it's GOOD. Look forward to the next update.
I have everything up to the tutorial battle working properly now. Bear in mind when I say demo, I mean EARLY demo, so there will be a few things that I want to put in but won't be there.
Two weeks and I'll get back to work on this, it's on hold while I get other things sorted.

And yet another post and update from me.
I'd estimate it to be 72% of the way to short playable demo version.
The last things I did were:
Redesign the Combat Framework
Start learning ATL
Write a script for an Inventory
Write a script for the Stats Screen


Of the remaining 28%, I'd say three quarters of that is the actual combat that will operate within the framework and allocate spoils, then modify stats if needed and return to the point where the game was before combat was initialised.

The remainder will be the character graphics my sister in law is working on.

Still excited in getting something done, so I'll be plugging away smoothing out bugs for a while as well as writing rudimentary combat script.

I've asked this on another forum, but:
Would you prefer a Final Fantasy side on battle style, or a first person dealy like Shining The Holy Ark? I could write both and let you work out which you prefer as they'll more or less be the same aside from the appearance.

I've plugged ahead with the demo code and it's abou 80% complete now. Takes a while when:

1: Your motivation has had to recover
2: You haven't been well
3: You've been travelling

So in all respects, please do help me out. The style I'm looking for is not the traditional watery eyes cutesy style, but a rather more serious, sharp look to fit the game's atmosphere.
I could post an exe of what I have, but it won't seem like much, and it will crash as I've prepared placeholder links at the EOF so I'll know where to go from there.
Also, I need to update my stock art while I work.

And help is greatly appreciated and will earn a place in my Special Thanks bit in the credits as you would like to be thanked. IE, I could either thank you by real name or by board name. Or any name you would care to be used. I will not use smartass names, insulting names... Or Elec-based names.

I stopped posting here about this for nearly a year, but that's because I switch to using the sig as an update notifier.

As it says, I've tweaked the UI to look better and slightly less bland. Now, to work again! I am still excited to be able to do this!
It's been two years already, but it's takens o long as things keep getting in the way.
