Post First attempt at loli . . . Quote
And nearly my first attempt at 'drawing' in general. I did this line art in Illustrator, and I want to learn how to color it, too. That'll be my next goal. For now, my biggest question is "Does this look loli enough?"

Tips on how to improve are welcome, if anyone is willing.

A lot of you all are really good artists, so I hope I can learn from example.

Thanks for your time!

Edit: I've colored it, now. whee. lol

For a first attempt at loli and a nearly first attempt at drawing, that's pretty good.

Critique: The biggest thing that jumps out at me is that her hips are a little too wide. They usually shouldn't be any wider than her bust width on a loli, with a slight narrowing in between.. This is particularly glaring in this picture because her legs are at about the right width for her body size, but much too narrow for the hip width. The hips also start a little too high, they should be even with or just under the belly button.

A bit of line denoting the shape of the stomach and the shape of the pubic region would also help a great deal. The arms are also just a little short, or her torso is a little too long, I'm not sure which. The tips of her fingers should be at about mid thigh.

Finally, it looks like you tried to do some perspective on the arms and legs, but it didn't quite work out. I can't really help you with that, because I'm a sculptor rather then a drawer and I'm terrible at perspective.

And please don't be intimidated by all that. It is a good first attempt.

Hierophant has a one hell of an eye. He pointed out stuff I didn't notice lol.

First of all, the picture is not bad at all for a first attempt. It's actually more composed then a lot of peoples first.

For the hips being too wide, that's not really a problem. Some loli's are like that depending on how developed they are, so I wouldn't consider that a mistake (i would prefer to draw loli's with hips like this.)

One thing that sticks out for me is how ROUND everything is. The face needs a little more of a chin point.

The shoulders are juts round and have no definition of muscle or bone.

From the hips down to the knees is a single curved like, lol (except that odd kink in the middle of the leg on HER right side.)

A helpful thing to read about and practice would be body structure and anatomy. This will teach you everything you need to know to draw any humanoid figure.

And you said you want to learn how to shade? Well, first of all think of where the light is coming from (above, below, left, right, or any of the combination) then think about where it would hit (for example, if a light hits the top of a breast, then a shadow would be on the underside of the breast and possible on the chest/stomach right below the breast.)

Then for actually choosing colors FOR the shadows, you could juts eye-ball it, or try to find a reference picture.

The big secret to drawing if you really need help, FIND A REFERENCE PICTURE. Study the picture hard, pick apart each part of the person and how they're moving.

Anyways, not sure what else to put. If you want more help, I can give you my AIM or MSN screenname to help coach you more =)

Anyone that wants help is free to ask for my screenname FYI

Those are some great tips! Thank you =) It's my first go, so I expected it wouldn't be perfect, but I'm still pretty proud of it, lol. I'm not sure what you mean by a line for the stomache and pubic region, though. I'll have to research some other drawings (oh noez lol). Thanks for taking the time to tell me how to improve =) I really do appreciate it, Hierophant!

Edit: Looks like Forsaken was writing something up while I was responding to Hierophant lol.

More great tips! I think I see what you mean by the single line to the knees. I guess it does look a little like a mutated fat roll or something, lol. And I was having a hard time making the legs and arms seem only slightly bent . . . it looks a little like rigor mortis. I had hoped the shading could hint at what my line art couldn't. This is great, though! Two people with lots of helpful ideas. Thank you for critiqueing my picture, Forsaken!

I've been wanting to start drawing stuff like this (not just loli, but anime/manga in general), but it was this site that finally motivated me to try. Go, Loli-power!! lol.

Well, I'm very bored right now so I did this for you, hopefully it can help. This was all done VERY quickly, so its not the greatest guideline but I'm sure it can help a little

The blue lines are "bone" or the skeletal structure, they're solid, so the fat/muscle tissue between them would stretch or fold (fat rolls for example) when the bones more away from each other or closer.

The red is muscle and fat tissues. These make the shape of the body for the most part. Most the tissue is in the Thighs, stomach, breast (for females) and may or may not have much fat/muscle on the arms (lolis usually have very skinny arms.) Places like the ankles, directly on the hips wrist, etc. don't have much fat or muscle on them. It should be easy to examine your own body to figure out where fat and muscle needs to go lol.

The green lines are guidelines. They make most pictures seem more alive and natural, this is not the best example in my picture but as you can see, the body follows the guideline. Normally when the hips move, the angle of the shoulders move do. sort of making a < shape (notice how the shoulder and hip lines get close on the same side and farther away on the other side.) This would make the stomach "stretch" on the side where the guidelines are farthest away, and on the other side, fatty rolls may appear.

Also the shading example isn't all that great, I did a quick job. It's explains itself pretty well. The light comes directly down in the lightest spot on the top left side. Once the breast goes from top, to the underside, it starts to get darker. Underneath would be the darkest spot because it's receiving no light due to the light coming from ABOVE the breast.

Hope this helps!

*edit* And just to be clear, this picture really isn't good lol. It has flaws (for example, the body might be a bit too long, the arms look terrible, the boobs are in a weird spot.) The picture is just to show you how to THINK about the structure of a character

*edit AGAIN* I changed a few things about the picture I REALLY didn't like, for example the bone for the ribcage was cut too short. And changed breast placement

OMG, that's great! Thank you for making this! It'll help tons, and others too that come across it. Sometimes, the concepts are hard to visualize, but this makes it easier =) Thank you thank you!

No problem Proles, if there's anything else I can do just ask. I have more fun doing this then just sitting down and drawing stuff lol. BTW check the picture again because I changed it a bit to be more accurate.

Here's one more thing for you. Keep in mind this is a GUIDELINE and I did not intend on actually "making" a picture, so it IS SLOPPY and has plenty of flaws.

First it shows the original outline.

Then the BASE colors (no shadows are applied.)

Then shadows are added in sort of a cell shading manner. Keep in mind, I'm not that good at making shadows lol. I'm still learning!!! (also I didn't put any thought or effort in to this example lol.)

One thing you'll notice is the panties completely changed and the base color doesn't exist in the shaded version. Since it wouldn't be receiving any light, it should be darker everywhere.

Also, I didn't feel like drawing hands, feet, or head/hair lmao. And I didn't feel like shading the skirt haha.

Thank you again! I'm really looking forward to putting all this to practice with my second drawing.

But, I suppose I should get my homework done, first LOL

You should be pretty proud of it Smile

If you want to do art of any kind, there's only three things you need to do. Practice, practice, practice. Talent is luck. The least talented can surpass a prodigy with enough practice.

Anyway, one thing to remember when your getting advice is that a lot of things can vary with style. Forsaken disagreed with my opinion on the hips. I think your head is fine, it reminds me a bit of Okina. Try different things and see what you like.

As for your question about what I meant by "A bit of line denoting the shape of the stomach and the shape of the pubic region", I put together a couple of examples so you'll know what to look for in other pictures.

On the pictures:

1: There's a little bit of a divide between the stomach and pubic region, following a muscle barrier that holds the intestines up out of the lower abdomen. On girls, this is about where a skimpy bikini would come up to.

2: There's a crease along the joint of the hip and thigh that goes all the way around, gowing in between the genitals and the leg and up under the buttock. It's not visible on the the outside of the leg unless the person is doing the splits, but is often very clear on the inside.

3: The hip bones are very distinct from the stomach region, which gives the lower stomach it's distinctive roundish appearance in girls. The hip bones are rather triangular and point up, and join in with the thigh on the sides.

4: Thinner people will have a very prominent divide between ribs and stomach; chubbier people not so much, but there is still a bit of definition.

Most of this can be shown with shading. Just how much you define these lines depends on your style, but you should probably sketch them in even if you don't intend to show them or intend to use shading so you know where everything is.

Forsaken certainly has some great advice, so listen closely to what he's saying.

Hope that helps.
